Figuring out what theme you want for your event may be trickier than you originally thought. What, with Google, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and all the other social media sites, there are now event themes that even the most experienced planner hasn't even considered. You want your event to reflect your personality or the things that make you and your partner the couple you are. Before you get flustered, here is a list of things to consider to help you move in the right direction!
1. Who are you?
Sit down with a pad of paper and a pen and write down words or draw pictures of things that make you happy. Do you love roses and romance, or carnations and comfort? Do you like to travel or are you a relax at home kind of person? Are you a foodie, or a photographer. Maybe you want a fancy table filled with centerpieces and crystals. Maybe you want to focus more on your favorite foods. Maybe you'd like to have a photo booth where your friends can make memories that they can take home with them. Is there a party game you want to play that can be tailored to fit your theme? Adding these touches to your event help people get immersed in your theme.
2. Choose your location.
You want to choose someplace you're comfortable. If you're more laid back and vintage, you don't want to have a black tie wedding in an upscale hotel ballroom. If your event is strictly black tie, you don't want to have it on a ranch somewhere, where everyone's clothes will get all dusty. The location you choose will help narrow down the themes you might be interested in.
3. Find the creative people in your life!
Everyone has that sister or best friend that always wears the cutest outfits and has the greatest ideas. Find them, talk to them, get ideas. Chances are, they'd love to go shopping with you or help you plan your décor. If they loved designing their house, they might have some great ideas for your party. Also, they know you best, so they'll know what you like and what you find hideous!
4. Social Media...
What would we do these days without social media. Spending anywhere from a few minutes to several hours browsing Google, Pinterest, Instagram, and other sites will help you narrow down your decision. There are so many options out there; just starting by searching “wedding themes” or “party themes” and finding pictures you like will help you figure out your style. From there, you can be more specific with what you're searching for. “Rustic”, “Vintage”, “Elegant”, “Country”, and “Antique” are all popular choices these days with couples, while selecting decades, movies, music, or your favorite belonging (sports, cars, video games) are popular choices for birthdays and showers. Choose what speaks to you!
5. Think several years down the road.
Sure, a Star Wars themed wedding sounds fun, but when you're 60 and looking back at your pictures, do you really want to see light sabers and funny masks? If the answer is yes, then go for it, but it might be a better idea to stay with a more classic idea. Alternately, if you're a crazy, fun-loving person, but you decide to go with something simple, will you regret in in 10 years? Only you can decide.
There is still plenty to do while planning your event, but hopefully this list helps you narrow down what direction you want to take your theme.
